Brain-Eating Amoeba Infects 12-Year-Old Girl

A 12-year-old girl in Arkansas has been hospitalized with a case of parasitic meningitis caused by a rare brain-eating amoeba.

The Arkansas Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that Kali Hardig contracted the disease after swimming in the Willow Springs Water Park in Little Rock, Ark.

Hardig's mother, Traci, took her daughter to a local hospital one day after visiting the water park. "I couldn't get her fever down," Hardig told the Christian Post. "She started vomiting. She'd say her head hurt really bad. She cried, and she would just look at me and her eyes would just kind of roll."?

The brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, causes a type of meningitis known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM, according to the CDC. The single-celled microbe ? found in warm, freshwater lakes and rivers ? enters the body through the nose and travels along the olfactory nerves to the brain, where it destroys brain tissue. [The 9 Oddest Medical Case Reports]

In the United States, most infections occur in the South during the summer months. PAM infections are rare: Between 2001 and 2010, just 32 infections were reported in the United States, according to the CDC. The microbe is not found in oceans or other saltwater bodies.

Early symptoms of an infection with Naegleria fowleri usually show up within seven days of exposure and include neck stiffness, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. Later, confusion, loss of balance, seizures and hallucinations can occur.

The disease is usually fatal, even when treatment begins early. Doctors put Hardig in a medically induced coma in order to stabilize her.

Though the majority of cases are caused by swimming in warm bodies of water, at least two cases have been linked to tap water: In 2011, two people living in different areas of Louisiana contracted PAM after using tap water in neti pots to irrigate their nasal passages and sinuses.

Officials in Arkansas have closed the Willow Springs Water Park during their investigation into the case. A 2010 Naegleria fowleri infection was also linked to the water park.

To minimize the risk of an infection with Naegleria fowleri, the CDC recommends that swimmers avoid bodies of freshwater when the water is warm, hold the nose shut or use nose clips, and avoid stirring up bottom sediments.?

Additionally, people who use neti pots should only use water that is distilled, sterilized, filtered or boiled (and then left to cool), and should clean and dry their pots after each use.

A person cannot become infected from drinking tap water (Naegleria fowleri infections can only be contracted through the nose), and the infection cannot be passed from one person to another.

This One-Handed Bottle Opener Sure Is Handy

Do you ever get frustrated when trying to open a beer bottle? You can do it on the side of a table, but that typically hurts your hand (a lot). You can open it with a lighter, but that's so college. You could use a regular bottle opener, but that's so boring.

Perrigo to buy Elan for $8.6B, seeks tax savings

DUBLIN (AP) ? U.S. drugmaker Perrigo has agreed to buy Ireland's Elan for $8.6 billion in a deal designed to expand overseas and reduce its tax bill.

Michigan-based Perrigo says it will pay Elan investors $6.25 per share in cash and $10.25 in Perrigo stock. The deal represents an 11 percent premium over Elan's closing price Friday.

Earlier this month, Elan said it was open to offers after spending months fighting a hostile, lower-priced takeover bid by Royal Pharma.

Perrigo said Monday it will become an Irish-based company and says it could cut its tax liabilities nearly in half, saving more than $150 million annually.

About 700 U.S. companies based in Ireland pay a 12.5 percent rate of tax on profits, versus the U.S. rate of 35 percent.

Elan confirmed the deal.

AP sources: Pentagon likely to cut furlough days

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Defense department civilians will likely face up to five fewer unpaid furlough days than originally planned, as Pentagon leaders scrimp to find up to $900 million in savings in the final months of the budget year that ends Sept. 30, officials told The Associated Press.

Officials said no final decisions have been made, but they believe civilian workers will be forced to take six to eight unpaid days off rather than the 11 days that had been scheduled. The move comes as workers begin their fourth week of furloughs ? a decision that riled department employees and prompted many to complain directly to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel as he visited military bases earlier this month.

Hagel has been saying that budget crunchers have been doing all they can to find saving to shorten the furlough time. Defense officials said Monday that they do not expect an announcement this week because the numbers have not yet been finalized.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter by name publicly.

They cautioned that the savings are for this year only, and won't affect likely budget cuts in 2014, if members of Congress don't act to avoid automatic, across-the-board cuts slated for next year.

About 650,000 department civilians have been taking one furlough day each week since early July. The furloughs were expected to save roughly $2 billion.

According to one defense official, current budget projections suggest that if Pentagon budget chiefs find about $500 million in savings, the number of furlough days will be shaved to eight. If they can find $900 million, the furloughs will be cut to six days.

Officials said the savings are the result of a number of things, including penny-pinching by the military services and Congress' decision to give the Pentagon more flexibility in moving money around between accounts.

During a recent swing down the East Coast to bases in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida, worried defense workers peppered Hagel with questions about the furloughs and their job security. And they gasped in surprise as the Pentagon chief warned that budget cuts will probably continue next year, likely triggering more furloughs and, possibly, layoffs.

Facing $37 billion in budget cuts this year, Pentagon leaders initially announced the 11 furlough days, arguing that they needed to shift money to other priorities, including combat training, flight hours, and efforts to bring tons of equipment home from Afghanistan. Since then, budget chiefs have been analyzing the numbers in a persistent effort to find unspent dollars as they neared the end of the fiscal year.

The Pentagon faces the prospect of an additional $52 billion budget cut in 2014 unless Congress and the White House come up with a deficit-cutting plan.

About 85 percent of the department's civilians have been subject to furloughs. The bulk of the exempt employees are foreign nationals or workers not paid through appropriated funding. Nearly 7,000 defense intelligence workers are also exempt, along with about 29,000 workers at Navy shipyards, where officials worried that the harm to shop maintenance would end up costing more than the salary cuts would save.

Thousands protest in Peru as president feels heat

July 28, 2013
Latest Update: July 28, 2013 05:47 pm

Peruvian police used tear gas and water cannon yesterday to drive back thousands of demonstrators protesting against what they said were President Ollanta Humala's unkept promises on schools and jobs.

On the eve of Independence Day celebrations, some 6,000 marchers heeded a call by the country's largest union confederation, CGTP, to turn out in force.

Those taking to the streets included university students, non-governmental activists and human rights groups.

In addition to a national doctors' and nurses strike, Humala now faces unions calling for a rethinking of a new law they fear will force the government to lay off huge numbers of state workers.

Students, meanwhile, are upset about a bill in the legislature that they fear will undercut the autonomy of universities. - AFP, July 28, 2013.

Blockbuster burnout? Here are other options

Movies

"The Wolverine" should claw its way to a healthy box-office win this weekend, as Hugh Jackman's mutant hero returns to theaters with another solo outing. But what if you're not a super-fan of superheroes? Maybe you're suffering from blockbuster burnout, and need an entertainment option of a kinder, gentler ilk. Here are some options, from lesser-known movies to home video and book choices.

IMAGE: "Fruitvale Station," "Breaking Bad" and "Orange Is The New Black"

AP; AMC; Lionsgate

"Fruitvale Station," "Breaking Bad" and "Orange Is The New Black" are some options to help with blockbuster burnout.

'Fruitvale Station'
You may not find "Fruitvale Station" playing next to "The Wolverine" and "Pacific Rim" at your local mall multiplex. But it's worth seeking out at an arthouse or indie theater if need be. It's based on the true story of Oscar Grant, 22, who was shot to death by a police officer at a San Francisco train station in the early hours of New Year's Day 2009. Grant was no saint, and the film doesn't portray him as such, but he was handcuffed and unarmed when he was killed by the officer, who had announced he was going for his Taser, then suddenly drew a gun and fired into Grant's back. The film won both the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. See it with someone you're comfortable discussing social issues with, because whatever your mindset going in, you'll want to talk about it. (Check local theater listings.)

'Breaking Bad'
The final eight episodes of "Breaking Bad" are speeding towards us like a meth-powered RV, and if you need to catch up, the time is now. You can watch the already aired episodes on DVD or via online streaming, and there are plenty of online dissections of each episode's pros and cons. Walter White's transformation from Mr. Chips to Scarface has been an engrossing and terrifying one, and how it will end is anyone's guess. (Aug. 11, 9 p.m., AMC.)

'Orange Is the New Black'
"Orange Is the New Black" is no "Oz." This new Netflix-only series focuses on Piper Chapman, a wealthy blonde New Yorker who finds herself a fish out of water when she's sent to a women's prison for 15 months. Piper is accustomed to making artisanal soaps and wearing designer clothes, not fighting for phone calls and wearing neon-orange prison garb. The women she meets are fascinating, including Laura Prepon of "That '70s Show" as the lover who helped land Chapman behind bars in the first place, and an almost unrecognizable Kate Mulgrew as the prison cook who tries to starve Chapman out after a poorly timed insult. (Netflix streaming.)

'The Way Way Back'
The Atlantic said "The Way Way Back" may be the best movie of the summer, and includes A-list star Steve Carell, yet even the most dedicated moviegoer can be forgiven for not knowing about it -- it hasn't seen even a quarter of the publicity blitz that surrounds movies like "Pacific Rim." Kids of the 1970s and '80s will remember that "the way back" was what many of us called the oddly situated seats in the far back of a station wagon, and that's where 14-year-old Duncan (Liam James) sits. He's struggling through life as his mom (Toni Collette) contemplates marrying her boorish boyfriend (Steve Carell). He meets pals at a local water park called Water Whizz and hears rumors that someone one passed another person in the tube slide, which seems impossible. One guess if it really is. (In theaters now.)

'Gone Girl'
Books where you're not sure if you can trust the narrator make for bumpy and intriguing reads. The 2012 bestseller "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn takes a wife's disappearance and forces the reader to stay alert, hopping from one possible scenario to another. You'll be reminded of the Laci Peterson case more than once. And if you like the book, get ready for the eventual movie, which will star Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as the main couple. (In bookstores and available for download now.)

'Power Moves'
Need a book to keep you laughing while you're living in your 'Bring (Chrysler Sebring) or downing brews at 'Bee's (Applebee's)? You need to get your hands on "Power Moves," you guys. The new book is an in-depth look at the life of (fictional, or so they say) Karl Welzein, the bad boy behind the hilarious Dad Boner Twitter feed. Karl must cope with Nosey Lady at work and a wife and kids who just don't get his rockin' off-the-chain, all-American life. How is this book not No. 1 in America? Kinda concerning, you guys.

6 Ways To Gain Credibility as an Industry Thought Leader | The ...

July 26, 2013 - Posted by Angela von Weber-Hahnsberg

Thought LeaderLet?s say you?re looking for a real estate agent to help you sell your house. You find one agent?s website with all the standard stuff ? a generic welcome, a bio page, listings?

But then you discover a realtor webpage that?s obviously different. It grabs you from the very first page with important information that?s extremely useful for someone looking to sell their house. Free downloads are available, with tips on how best to stage your home when potential buyers come calling. There?s a daily blog discussing the real estate market in depth, and how you can take advantage of ? or work around ? current trends. Later that day, as you?re browsing through some real estate groups on LinkedIn, you see that same realtor taking part in discussions, and answering people?s questions ? not in a sales-y way, but just to help them out, no strings attached.

?

Which of these two realtors would you choose to sell your house?

Of course, you?d choose the second one! And that is the power of becoming an industry thought leader.

So how can you apply this real estate scenario to your own business? Just follow these six steps to establish yourself as an expert in your field:

1. Blog about your industry. This is one of the most basic ? but also one of the most effective ? ways of showcasing your expertise. Set up a blog on your website in which you educate customers about your industry. Make sure to update it regularly, at least once or twice a week. A well-written blog will give potential clients confidence that your products or services are among the very best, since they were created by an industry expert.

2. Reach out to other thought leaders about guest blogging. Once you?ve established? your own blog, it will lend even more credibility to your name if you can contribute an article to the blog of someone who is already seen as a thought leader in your field. The fact that they value your contribution enough to post it on their own blog will show clients the depth of your expertise.

3. Make a name for yourself by publishing helpful content. Go beyond blogging. Write ebooks, white papers, or other downloadable content that people can read for free. Doing so demonstrates that you are capable of thought leadership on an even higher scale ? that your knowledge of your industry extends beyond 500-word blog posts.

4. Try podcasting, or host webinars. Adding these video or audio components to your website can give extra authority to your claim to thought leadership. Discuss industry news, or invite other industry experts to join you as guests.

5. Be helpful on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a great tool for reaching out to potential clients. Join groups, and take the time to answer people?s questions thoughtfully. Take part in discussions, so that you are a familiar presence. You might even want to set up your own group, so that you can guide the conversation yourself.

6. But whatever you do, don?t go overboard with self-promotion. In fact, don?t promote your own business at all, in any of these avenues. A long, thoughtful, well-written response to a question will immediately come across as a mere ploy to get someone?s business, if you end it with, ?Give me a call and we can discuss the ways I can help you?? or something similar. Just be helpful, without expecting (or asking for) any business in return. The perception is that thought leaders don?t need to ask for business ? people seek them out because of their expertise ? so don?t compromise your position as a leader by looking pushy or needy.

Have you discovered any other routes to establishing yourself as a thought leader in your field? What works, and what doesn?t? Let us know in the comments section below!

Report: RON Autom?viles shows off RXX and R7 sports cars for Mexico

Occasionally we learn about a new car manufacturer starting up in Mexico, but usually the country's most significant involvement in the auto industry is relegated to building vehicles and parts for other auto companies. RON Autom?viles de M?xico hopes to change that with its new line of sports cars. The flagship model, the RXX, resembles an Ariel Atom with bodywork, while the R7 was inspired by the Lotus 7.

The RXX will be built and sold in three different versions, the RXX, RXX-S and RXX-R. The company states on its Facebook page that the model variants will be differentiated by their finish, equipment and power, but their specifications haven't been released yet. Not much else is known about the RXX except that it is expected to be a lightweight, high-performance roadster with two tandem seats (that's right; the driver sits in front of the passenger), an aluminum chassis with carbon-fibre bodywork and a carbon-fibre interior. RON states the RXX will be a street-legal machine that brings the excitement of driving a Formula One car to the masses.

The RON R7 will follow a more traditional mold, as it was inspired by the Lotus 7 and is based off of the 7's chassis; no tandem seating here. From the photos, we can tell the R7 retains features that would be found on an old Lotus 7, such as rear drum brakes and a live rear axle. Let's just hope that third-generation Volkswagen Jetta parts don't find their way into the build.

'Girl Most Likely' review: hey, Kristen Wiig, put your Bridesmaid's dress back on

By Alonso Duralde

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Pop quiz time: Say you made an acclaimed, Academy Award-nominated movie about a working-class artist, followed by two limp and forgettable comedies about bright young people at sea among obnoxious and awful Manhattan society types.

For your new film, would you (a) strike out in a bold new direction, (b) consider doing another movie that played to the strengths of your first and most successful movie, or (c) tackle yet another badly written and charmless story of a gamine being spiritually eaten alive on the mean streets of New York City?

Sadly, documentarians-turned-narrative-filmmakers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini chose "c." Apparently hell-bent on making us forget that they were responsible for the sublime "American Splendor," they have now scored a hat trick of miserable comedies, with their latest, "Girl Most Likely," picking up where the disappointing "The Extra Man" and "The Nanny Diaries" left off.

"Girl Most Likely" is the kind of movie destined to become the answer to the rhetorical question, "With a cast this good, how bad can it be?" You might think that any film featuring Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon and Darren Criss (not to mention supporting turns by Bob Balaban, Natasha Lyonne and June Diane Raphael) would have some redeeming qualities, but you would be incorrect.

Wiig stars as Imogene, a vapid New Yorker who runs with the snobby Manhattan A-listers despite her New Jersey roots. In rapid succession she loses her wealthy boyfriend and cushy magazine job; when she stages a fake suicide to get her fella back - everyone agrees the note was exquisitely written - all she gets for her troubles is being remanded to the care of her estranged mother Zelda (Bening), a compulsive gambler.

Imogene wants desperately to get back to Manhattan, particularly after Zelda reveals that Imogene's father isn't really dead but simply abandoned the family, but circumstances conspire to keep her stuck in the clapboard Ocean City house that Zelda shares with boyfriend George (Dillon), Imogene's mollusk-obsessed brother Ralph (Broadway star Christopher Fitzgerald, creating the closest thing to a memorable character here) and boarder Lee (Criss), a former Yalie who currently fronts a Backstreet Boys tribute band in an Atlantic City '90s revue.

We learn that Imogene was a once-promising playwright who became a vapid materialist when the words stopped flowing, and over the course of the movie she discovers that her New York pals are fair-weather phonies while her friends and relatives in New Jersey are the genuine salt-of-the-earth types who really care. ("I forgot that hanging out with regular people could be such an enthralling experience," she observes on a boozy night out with Lee and his fellow show-folk.)

All of this sounds much funnier on paper; when a recently hospitalized Imogene wakes up in the back of Zelda's Trans Am in a casino parking lot, or when Imogene attends a fancy party wearing one of her old high school dresses because her current clothes are inside the apartment from which she's been evicted, you get the idea that this is supposed to be comedic, but there's no laugh there.

Wiig made us roar and cringe with her "Bridesmaids" character, who was reeling from the failure of her business venture, but Imogene is too judgmental and unlikeable for us to care about and too adrift and vulnerable for us to enjoy her humiliation. Michelle Morgan's thudding screenplay never establishes interesting characters or even a consistent tone, turning its snobs and slobs alike into flat, dull cartoons.

And with the exception of Morgan, everyone here has done much better work in the past. As for this mess, it's Most Likely to get left off of a lot of r?sum?s.

Yelp gobbles up SeatMe, an emerging competitor to OpenTable

Yelp gobbles up SeatMe, a competitor to OpenTable

Yelp just made its partnership with OpenTable very, very awkward with the announcement that it'll purchase a competing reservation service known as SeatMe for $12.7 million. The 16-person operation, based in San Francisco, runs a web and app platform that focuses on restaurants and nightlife activities. According to TechCrunch, SeatMe sent an email to its current customers in the wake of the announcement, with a promise that the service will continue operation. Meanwhile, Yelp is positioning the acquisition as a compliment to its existing offerings, which suggests that the company may bide its time before re-evaluating its partnership with OpenTable. If anything, it looks like Yelp's getting very serious about reservations and appointment bookings, and that could mean a more convenient future for you.

Wedding Style Mistakes Brides Regret Most

Written by Maressa Brown on CafeMom?s blog, The Stir.

Brides have said it before, and they'll say it again: Regardless of how chill or relaxed or "whatever" you are going into it, it's shocking how the process of picking out a wedding dress is different from picking out any other outfit you've ever worn in your entire life. The dress is obviously the big ticket item, but it's quite normal to find yourself obsessing over all the other details, too -- from shoes to earrings, I sweat bullets over almost every accessory. Ironically, in the end, no matter how much time I spent debating the pros and cons of heels vs. flip flops or wearing a new bracelet I picked out with my bridesmaids vs. a friend's bracelet that would be my "something borrowed," I still suffered a handful of wedding style slip-ups on the Big Day.

But you don't have to have worn shoulder pads a la 1986 to come to regret a fashion move you made as a bride. Here, six wedding fashion mistakes real women have made and cringed at the thought of years later:

1. Hair in your face: It's perfectly normal to choose a wedding hairstyle concept that you're sure is stunning or timeless, only to later realize that you wish you had trimmed those bangs or gone for a style that would have prevented your hair from getting in your face throughout the night.

2. Last minute changes: Your wedding day may drive you to drastic, spur-of-the-moment measures, like cutting your long flowing gown short. You might think you're going with your gut, but switching at the last minute to something that's 180 degrees from what you originally planned could be asking for disaster.

3. Uncomfortable shoes: Damn shoes. Not wearing in the pair I was convinced would be comfortable -- because they're made for ballroom dancers with awesome padding! -- was one of my biggest mistakes of my wedding day. The strappy part that goes across your toes dug into my feet causing blisters that burned so badly through family photos and the ceremony. I'm still asking myself, "Why didn't I just wear flip flops the whole time -- especially considering that NO ONE would have known?" They sure didn't know when I wore them through the reception! Guh.

4. Sweaty dress: You may love your dress with the loooong train and layers of tulle, satin, and lace. I know I did. But when it came time to bustle it up later and get down on the dance floor while navigating all that sweaty fabric, I didn't love it as much -- and wondered if it would have been wise to switch into a sexy, short cocktail number for the reception. In retrospect, I am glad I stayed in my beloved dress, but I wouldn't begrudge any bride a pre-reception wardrobe change if it would make her more comfortable.

5. Ill-fitted dress: Despite standing there getting nipped and tucked for hours during an average of three fittings, it's not unusual for a bride to say she wished her dress had fit a bit better on the Big Day. I noticed mine was gaping a bit in the bust. Could pay to take photos of yourself at the second to last or last fitting, considering how the dress looks from all angles and while you're moving in it.

6. Underwhelming hair or makeup: No matter how many trials you do, the hairstyling or makeup job you're going to get on your wedding day is never going to be exactly the same as you've seen it done before. It helps to have pictures and communicate with your stylists, but ultimately, you might have to speak up about slightly tweaking something. Even then, some brides say they found they were underwhelmed or not over-the-moon with their hair and/or makeup. Bummer.

What's a style choice you made on your wedding day that you came to regret?
