CTIA Wireless 2012 wrap-up

Oh, how we will miss New Orleans. It's been a long and busy week in the Big Easy as tens of thousands of calories were sacrificed in the name of bringing you the most comprehensive coverage of CTIA's annual spring show. Not that we mind -- we love doing it, and it's easy justification for the dozens of beignets we downed during our stay. The event was a tad on the quiet side this year (no companies announced any buyouts, for starters) we still kept ourselves more than adequately busy sticking our noses in every nook and cranny of the show floor. Karl Marx: 10 great quotes on his birthday

May 5 marks the birthday of Karl Marx. Best known as the author of "Capital" and, with Freidrich Engels, the "Communist Manifesto," Marx provided the intellectual foundation for an array of regimes that at one time governed nearly half of Earth's population.

These regimes were, for many, a long nightmare of state terror, genocides, deportations, extrajudicial executions, forced labor, and artificial scarcity, crimes that left tens of millions of people dead and deprived many more of basic dignity.?

But while Marx's solutions are widely and rightfully condemned, his analysis still resonates among workers and intellectuals alike around the world. As much of the globe struggles to extricate itself from an economic slowdown that many believe was created by the excesses of what Marx called "the bourgeoisie," several Marxist concepts ? the anarchic nature of capitalism, the parasitism of the financial class, and the reserve army of the unemployed, to name a few ? appear to take on new relevance.?

Bing?s Biggest Redesign Yet Puts Pure Algorithmic Results Up Front, Sticks Context and Social In The Sidebar

Bing today begins the rollout of a major redesign that separates search results into three panes: pure, algorithmic, text-focused results in the center; context like maps, reviews, and actionable input fields to the right; and social assistance like friends and experts who can help on the far right. The redesign is Bing's answer to "Search Overload" -- the exhausted feeling people get from today's search results pages that have become a cluttered mess of links, tools, social, maps, and actions. Microsoft is looking to take advantage of public discontent with Google recent missteps in design and social. Bing aims to frame Google as impure, with its desire to highlight Google+ distorting the quality of search result ranking. If it works it could claw market share away from Google and make search a real two-horse race. Sony Xperia GX packs 13MP camera and 4.6-inch HD display, joined by Xperia SX to offer LTE in Japan

Sony's announced its first two LTE-capable phones for its Japanese customers -- and there's two of 'em. The Xperia GX is up first, with a 720p 4.6-inch display squeezed in alongside a new 13-megapixel camera -- a first for Sony's mobile family, and presumably its new CMOS sensor. A 1.5 GHz dual-core processor ensures it should all tick along nicely, while the hardware design follows the curves of last year's Xperia Arc, this time with a matte finish. The camera upgrade and huge screen makes a good case for this to be Sony's new flagship device -- mere months since the Xperia S debuted in Europe -- and before the Xperia Ion has even had chance to launch in the US.

It's joined by the Xperia XS, which Sony claims is the world's lightest LTE capable handset, weighing in at just under 100g. It packs a smaller 3.7-inch screen with the same Mobile Bravia engine found on its bigger brother -- and the rest of Sony's recent handsets. It's joined by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (although there's no specifics on what type just yet), a more standard 8-megapixel camera and it wouldn't be a Japanese phone without infrared connectivity, mobile wallet and a mobile TV -- they're all built-in. Both phones will launch in black and white, and Android fans can rest easy, as they'll both arrive with Android 4.0 installed when they hit stores in Japan this summer.
