Developing power sources for flexible, stretchable electronics

Dec. 14, 2012 ? Electronic devices become smaller, lighter, faster and more powerful with each passing year. Currently, however, electronics such as cell phones, tablets, laptops, etc., are rigid. But what if they could be made bendable or stretchy?

According to the University of Delaware's Bingqing Wei, stretchable electronics are the future of mobile electronics, leading giants such as IBM, Sony and Nokia to incorporate the technology into their products.

Beyond traditional electronics, potential stretchable applications include biomedical, wearable, portable and sensory devices, such as cyber skin for robotic devices and implantable electronics.

"Advances in soft and stretchable substrates and elastomeric materials have given rise to an entirely new field," says Wei, a mechanical engineering professor at UD.

But even if scientists can engineer stretchable electronics -- what about their energy source?

"Rechargeable and stretchable energy storage devices, also known as supercapacitors, are urgently needed to complement advances currently being made in flexible electronics," explains Wei.

Wei's research group at the University is making significant progress in developing scalable, stretchable power sources for this type of application using carbon nanotube macrofilms, polyurethane membranes and organic electrolytes.

This, he says, requires new thinking about materials processing and device manufacturing to maximize energy storage without compromising energy resources.

To reveal a stretchable supercapacitator's true performance, the Wei group examined the system's electrochemical behavior using buckled single-wall nanotube (SWNT) electrodes and an elastomeric separator.

According to Wei, the supercapacitor developed in his lab achieved excellent stability in testing and the results will provide important guidelines for future design and testing of this leading-edge energy storage device.

As they work to refine the technology, Wei has filed a provisional patent to protect his team's research. The work was recently published in Nano Letters, a journal of the American Chemical Society.

Historic camp discovered in Antarctica

More than 100 years after two groups of men raced each other to be the first to reach the South Pole, modern-day explorers have rediscovered what appears to be one of their camp sites on the slopes of the world's southernmost volcano.

Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Englishman Robert Falcon Scott were the explorers who led teams of their countrymen on grueling journeys across the frigid continent in an effort to be the first to go where no man had gone before. Amundsen won the race, reaching the pole on Dec. 14, 2011. Scott also made it there, on Jan. 17, 1912, but perished with the remainder of his crew on the arduous trek back to the edge of the continent.

Scott and his team camped on the slopes of Mount Erebus, the southernmost volcano, during their journey. The spot was known as "the highest camp," according to a National Science Foundation release.

Clive Oppenheimer, a volcanologist at Cambridge University in England and working at Erebus as part of an NSF team, found what he thinks is the same camp site using written accounts and historic images from the Scott Polar Research Institute in Great Britain, the NSF release said. (The institute was founded by one of the men from Scott's party who climbed Erebus as part of the 1912 Terra Nova expedition.)

The site Oppenheimer located features a ring of stones where a tent once stood and appears to match historic photos taken during the 1912 expedition. "Conservators from the New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust have been asked to verify the historic find," the NSF wrote.

The area will be recorded and searched to look for artifacts from the original expedition. Tents and other sites from early 20th century expeditions have also been found and preserved, some with a wealth of artifacts.

The team that climbed Mount Erebus in 1912 included geologist Raymond Priestley; they took geological specimens and mapped the area. Scott's expedition was more focused on gleaning scientific research from their mission than Amundsen's was.

The 1912 expedition was preceded at Erebus by the 1907-1909 Nimrod Expedition, mounted by explorer Ernest Shackleton, which failed to reach the South Pole.

The NSF team is studying the 14,500-foot Erebus, which is interesting geologically beyond being the southernmost volcano. It is also home to Earth's only long-lived lava lakes.

Egypt opposition calls off referendum boycott, seeks "no" vote

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's liberal and secular opposition said on Wednesday it would back a "no" vote in a referendum on a divisive new constitution promoted by Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, calling off a boycott as long as safeguards are in place for a fair vote.

The army called off "unity" talks involving rival factions, dealing a blow to efforts to resolve a worsening political crisis over the referendum and rein in street protests that have turned violent.

The latest convulsion in Egypt's transition to democracy was brought on by a decree last month from Mursi in which he awarded himself sweeping powers to push through the new constitution, a necessary prelude to parliamentary elections early next year.

Mursi's move caused huge controversy, dividing the Arab world's most populous state and bringing thousands of pro- and anti-government protesters onto the streets in the worst upheaval since the fall of Hosni Mubarak almost two years ago.

The unrest has so far claimed seven lives in clashes between the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and the opposition. The army has yet to use force to keep protesters away from the presidential palace, now ringed with tanks, barbed wire and concrete barricades.

Egyptians abroad began voting at embassies in the referendum on the new basic law that Mursi fast-tracked through an Islamist-dominated drafting assembly. The start of the voting process was a setback for the opposition, which had hoped to delay the plebiscite.

The absence of a boycott could help ease confrontation on the streets and give the charter more legitimacy if it passes.

The main opposition coalition says the draft constitution does not reflect the aspirations of all of Egypt's 83 million people because of provisions which could give Muslim clerics a role in shaping laws. It wants a new charter with more safeguards for minority rights, including for the 10 percent of Egyptians who are Christian.

Mursi's supporters say the constitution is needed to continue the transition to democracy. Some deride their opponents as Mubarak-era "remnants" trying to cling to power.

"We will vote 'no'," opposition politician and former Arab League chief Amr Moussa told Reuters.

The opposition said that unless the referendum is held with full supervision by the judiciary, security guarantees and local and international monitoring, it would still call for a boycott. It also wants the vote held on one day rather than two.

"VOTE NO"

Leftist Hamdeen Sabahy of the Popular Front said: "The Front decided to call on the people to take part in the referendum and reject this draft constitution and vote no.

"If these guarantees aren't in place by the day of the referendum on Saturday, we will withdraw from it."

The army's attempt to arrange talks appears to have foundered because of suggestions it was taking on a political role. Defence Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is also head of the armed forces, said on Tuesday he wanted talks which would not be political in character.

"We will sit together as Egyptians," he said.

But an army official told Reuters on Wednesday that the event had been called off because of the "media hype" that erupted implying that the minister was calling for national dialogue, a politically loaded phrase.

"The army cannot steer the political process and will not be dragged back into politics," the official said.

Presidency sources said Mursi, who had been expected to attend, had decided to send the head of the ruling party instead.

The army dominated Egypt throughout the post-colonial era, providing every president from its ranks until Mubarak was overthrown last year. After his election in June, Mursi shunted aside generals who had held interim power after Mubarak, and appointed a new high command.

Islamists have won parliamentary and presidential elections since the fall of Mubarak. They want the vote on the new constitution to go ahead and are confident it will pass, paving the way for them to win a new parliamentary election next year.

The opposition had argued that the chaotic protests and counter-protests of the last two weeks meant the referendum should be postponed. But large opposition rallies this week did not change Mursi's mind.

State media said the two-day voting plan had been adopted because many of the judges needed to oversee the vote were staying away in protest at the decision to hold the referendum. Voting therefore had to be staggered to move around those judges willing to cooperate.

Billy Idol to play birthday after man's 2-year effort

By Gene Johnson, The Associated Press

SEATTLE -- Michael Henrichsen has ideas about how he might celebrate his 26th birthday this week. First, Billy Idol rolls up in a limo and tells him to hop in. There are women everywhere. And later, when the British rock icon takes the stage and rips into "Rebel Yell," bras start flying and 1,800 of his closest friends go wild.

Ted S. Warren / AP

Michael Henrichsen poses in the bedroom of his home in Seattle next to a poster of rock star Billy Idol.

Far-fetched? Maybe not. After a two-year campaign that was part resume stunt, part charity drive and part heartfelt effort to get his far-flung friends together for a great time, the irrepressible Seattle man has actually persuaded Idol to play his birthday party Friday night.

"This is surreal," Henrichsen says. "It should not be happening."

So why is it? In his bedroom, surrounded by Cyndi Lauper and Madonna records, a drumstick he picked up at an Idol show two years ago, and rock posters, Henrichsen explains:

In October 2010, he had just turned 24 and was having an early life crisis. Friends were getting married and moving away. He was working three jobs and making little progress paying off $40,000 in college loans.

Salvation came over the stereo at the Bellevue Square Mall's Billabong clothing store, where he worked. It was "White Wedding." Henrichsen turned to a coworker: "Wouldn't it be cool if we got Billy Idol to play at my birthday party?"

She laughed. He laughed. No way, right?

But he went home and thought about it. He loved the way Idol blended pop and rock. Idol seemed like a fun guy. Henrichsen loves other music from the '80s, but he couldn't see Prince or Duran Duran agreeing. Idol, who lives in Los Angeles, wouldn't even have to leave his time zone.

Scoring Idol could also be a major coup for his resume. Henrichsen isn't sure what he wants to do for a career ? something in entertainment or event planning or PR, maybe ? but he thought this could get it started.

"I'm like, how feasible is it?" he says. "I realized it would cost a lot of money, something I don't have, so that's where the creativity came into play. How do you network to convince Billy Idol that it would be a good idea for him to come play a show on a specific date in Seattle?"

The first step was getting a friend, Jim Stamper, to build him a website -- playmybirthdaybillyidol.com. "I thought it was never gonna work," Stamper says.

The next step was to get people to look at the website. Henrichsen hauled a boom box through a deserted Pike Place Market at night, dancing as "Mony Mony" blared, then posted a video of it. He and friends held a banner over Interstate 5.

But the site didn't start getting much attention until he decided to collect some celebrity endorsements. Comedian Kevin Nealon came to town to do standup, and Henrichsen got him on a 12-second video, telling Idol, "You gotta come to Seattle next October to do ..."

"Michael," Henrichsen prompts.

"... Michael's birthday. It's gonna be awesome."

Endorsements from other B- and C-listers followed: musician Rick Springfield, former Seattle Mariner Jay Buhner, porn star Ron Jeremy. Hanging out at book signings and other celebrity appearances became a fourth job. Only Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue and comedian Tom Green turned him down.

Local media outlets started to notice. And the Google news alerts made their way to Idol's people. They called Henrichsen and told him the campaign was cool, but that they couldn't promise anything.

"When we first became aware of Michael's project we were inclined to see it as just another extreme idea from a well-meaning fan," said Idol's manager, Tony Dimitriades. "But as Michael's campaign continued, his persistence and resourcefulness won Billy over."

It took a while, though.

In the meantime Henrichsen, who sings, plays guitar and does a passable Idol impersonation, put together an '80s cover band, Nite Wave. They began playing a series of charity concerts dubbed Billy Idol Aid and raised more than $10,000 for the American Red Cross and Northwest Harvest, which supplies meals to food banks.

Ted S. Warren / AP

Michael Henrichsen, center, sings during a rehearsal of his '80s music tribute band Nite Wave in Lynnwood, Wa., earlier this month.

But when October 2011 came around, Idol didn't show. Instead, he sent a video, saying he was sorry he couldn't make it?-- but there was always next year.

Though some friends and family were a bit tired of the project, Henrichsen decided to give it one more year. He had bimonthly chats with Idol's people to update them on his status. Eventually, the Showbox, a Seattle venue that hosted some of the Billy Idol Aid events, made an offer to host the event at its location south of downtown.

Finally, last August, Idol's people called from Japan, where he was touring, and said Idol was in, with his band. Henrichsen says he started screaming and running laps around the mall.

And when 900-plus people showed up for Billy Idol Aid IV, they were treated to an official video announcement from the man himself.

"The people of the world have spoken!" Idol thundered. "The dream will become reality ...."

"It's gonna be pretty much the coolest night ever," says Henrichsen, whose birthday was Monday. "We'll have as much fun as possible before we get to the 9-5 part of my life."

If you could have any singer or band play your birthday party, who would it be? Tell us on Facebook!

State Proposal Asks Voters if 'Michigan Quality Home Care Council ...

Michigan's Proposal 4 on the Nov. 6 ballot pertains to home health care and the collective bargaining rights for thousands of workers.

The proposal calls for the establishment of a "Michigan Quality Home Care Council" in the state constitution and would affirm limited collective bargaining rights for about 42,000 home health care workers. Those workers are hired and fired by the elderly or disabled participants of the Medicaid-funded Home Help Services Program, and are paid by the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Michigan Citizens Research Council states.

The council would be the so-called public employer of home health care aides while the participants of the Home Health Care program would still have the right to choose, hire, train and terminate their home health care aides.

"The proposal provides that participant-employed home health care providers 'shall have the same rights relating to collective bargaining with the Council as are otherwise provided by law to public employees not within the classified civil service relating to their public employers' and would amend Section 5 of Article XI (Classified State Civil Service) to add 'in-home personal care providers subject to the authority of the Michigan Quality Home Care Council' to the list of those exempt from classified state civil service," the Michigan Citizens Research Council states.

The home health care providers would not be public or state employees and would not have the right to strike.

The proposal outcome doesn't affect the outcome of the Medicaid-funded Home Help Services Program will remain in effect regardless of the outcome.

According to the research council, the proposal would:

  • Allow in-home care workers to bargain collectively with the Michigan Quality Home Care Council. Continue the current exclusive representative of in-home care workers until modified in accordance with labor laws.
  • Require MQHCC to provide training for in-home care workers, create a registry of workers who pass background checks and provide financial services to patients to manage in-home care costs.
  • Preserve patients? rights to hire in-home care workers not referred from the MQHCC registry who are bargaining unit members.
  • Authorize the MQHCC to set minimum compensation standards and terms and conditions of employment.

Read the ballot language here.

Islamic Society purchases former Shoemaker post

LYNN ? An Islamic organization that counts local residents among its members has bought the former Shoemaker veterans post on Lynnfield Street outside Wyoma Square.

The Islamic Society of the North Shore Inc. bought the 35 Lynnfield St. building for $290,000 from Peabody-based Todisco Properties, according to information provided by Southern Essex Register of Deeds John L. O?Brien?s office.

Ward 1 City Councilor Wayne Lozzi said the society?s attorney, Samuel Vitali of Lynn, contacted him about the purchase prior to the Oct. 5 transaction. He said Society members will worship in the former post building and host other activities none of which will involve serving alcohol.

?It seems very benign nothing the neighbors would object to. I?m happy to have them,? Lozzi said.

Lozzi said he has not spoken to society members. The organization?s filing with the state provided by O?Brien?s office lists Arlington resident Rhabiul Chowdhury as Society president and lists three individuals with Lynn addresses as society treasurer and directors.

The filing lists August 24, 2012 as the society?s ?date of organization? at 35 Lynnfield St. Attempts to reach Chowdhury and Society Clerk Mahababul Haque of Swampscott Monday were unsuccessful.

The post is a former public school purchased in 1958 by American Legion members who organized their post in 1948 in honor of Capt. William G. Shoemaker, a Marine Corps officer killed on Guam in 1943.

The post opened on Veterans Day in 1959 with 200 members. Membership fell to 55 members by 2007, when they relocated to Summer Street after providing space in the post for a local church. A 2011 proposal by Highlands-based veterans to relocate to the Shoemaker post met resistance from neighbors who did not want late-evening functions at the post or alcohol served.

Lozzi said he does not believe the society needs council special permit approval to use the Shoemaker building. He said the post building has about 30 off-street parking spots and said Vitali told him society members want to meet with neighbors.

?They obviously want to be welcomed and to be good neighbors,? he said.

Clad in pink, blue and yellow clothes, more than 250 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) athletes took part in a sports festival in the Nepali capital, Kathmandu, at the weekend, billed by organizers as the first in South Asia.

About 1,500 spectators cheered as the athletes, waving rainbow coloured flags, marched at the Dasharath Stadium in the heart of Kathmandu in the opening ceremony of the three-day event that showed how attitudes are changing, albeit slowly, in the conservative, Hindu-majority nation.

The athletes were accompanied by masked dancers and Panche baja ? musicians playing Nepal?s traditional instruments including pipes and drums.

?After I participated in the tournament, my confidence has increased,? said 29-year-old Bakti Shah, who took part in football and athletics.

American Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis, on a visit to Nepal to support the rights of sexual minorities, kicked off the event at a football match, wearing a Nepali cloth cap and cream-coloured Buddhist prayer scarf.

?Initially I was a little worried whether we will be able to hold such a big event in a major public venue,? said well-known activist Sunil Babu Pant, founder of the Blue Diamond Society, a leading gay rights group.

?We have done it and proved that we can do,? added Pant, a former member of parliament.

Homosexuality is still taboo in Nepal, which does not have clear laws about the rights of the increasingly assertive gay community.

Same sex marriages have taken place in public but wedding certificates are not given by authorities as there are no laws that recognise such unions. People found guilty of ?unnatural sex? face up to one year in jail.

Until about six years ago, homosexuals were beaten on the streets of Kathmandu and arrested.

CHANGING ATTITUDES

?Personal attitudes in the conservative society are slowly changing. It is a good thing,? Pant said.

Nepal, home to Mount Everest and the birthplace of Buddha, emerged from 10 years of Maoist conflict in 2006, after which the country began to increasingly recognise the rights of the underprivileged communities.

In 2007, the country?s Supreme Court ordered the government to do away with laws that discriminate against gays and guarantee them the same rights as other citizens.

Gay beauty contests are now organized and held, and gay pride parades have been held in several major cities, including Kathmandu. Early this year, a teenage boy who underwent a sex-change operation in Thailand was welcomed home by his family as the country?s first known transsexual.

Gays still face numerous difficulties. Schools and colleges won?t accept them, and they have trouble getting national identity cards in the gender they prefer.

But ordinary Nepalis were positive about the event.

?I think it is good they have assembled here for the sports tournament,? said a 24-year-old college student Raju Shakya.

?They should be entitled to the same rights as others without discrimination. They are also human beings like us.?

Turkey bans Syrian planes from its air space, rebels gain

BEIRUT/AMMAN (Reuters) - Turkey has banned all Syrian aircraft from its air space as it takes an increasingly firm stance against President Bashar al-Assad, while Syrian rebels said on Sunday they had made more gains in a key province near the Turkish border.

Human Rights Watch said Syrian government forces had dropped Russian-made cluster bombs over civilian areas in the past week as they battled to reverse rebel advances, an act which rights groups say can constitute a war crime.

NATO-member Turkey has increasingly taken on a leadership role in the international coalition ranked against Assad.

Turkish confrontation with Syria increased in the past two weeks because of cross-border shelling and escalated on October 10 when Ankara forced down a Syrian airliner en route from Moscow, accusing it of carrying Russian munitions for Assad's military.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Sunday Turkish air space had been closed to Syrian planes. Syria banned Turkish planes from flying over its territory on Saturday.

"We made a new decision yesterday and informed Syria. We closed our air space to civilian Syrian flights as well as military flights," Davutoglu said.

Russia has said there were no weapons on the ground plane and that it was carrying a legal cargo of radar. But it moved to cool friction with Ankara - Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the incident would not hurt "solid" relations.

The bloodshed inside Syria has worsened markedly in the past two months although neither side has been able to gain a distinct advantage. Combat has been reported nationwide but the crucial strategic battles are being fought in an arc through western Syria, where most of the population lives.

Rebels surrounded an army garrison on Sunday near a northwestern town, in the latest push to seize more territory near the border with Turkey, opposition activists said. Rebels also posted video on the Internet purportedly showing a fighter jet they had shot down in the area the previous day.

Several hundred soldiers were trapped in the siege of a base in Urum al-Sughra, on the main road between the contested city of Aleppo, Syria's commercial and industrial hub, and Turkey.

"Rebels attacked an armored column sent from Aleppo to rescue the 46th Regiment at Urum al-Sughra and stopped it in its tracks," Firas Fuleifel, one of the activists told Reuters by phone from Idlib province, west of Aleppo. He said the jet was shot down while trying to provide air support to the column.

"ASSAD'S LAST BREATH"

Rebels say they have been extending their control of the rugged agricultural province throughout the past week, capturing several towns on the border and making gains in the al-Rouge plain west of the city of Idlib, the provincial capital.

The province is the main base and supply route for rebels fighting urban warfare against Assad's forces for control of Aleppo, a city of several million people that could determine the course of the 18-month rebellion against Assad.

After four days of heavy fighting in the town of Azmarin and surrounding villages along the border with Turkey's Hatay province, the rebels appeared to have a fragile hold there.

"These areas are the last areas around the border where Assad has control. If he loses these then all of the border around Hatay will be under the control of the (rebel) Free Syrian Army," rebel fighter Ahmad Qasem told Reuters, after crossing into Turkey.

"Assad's army is taking its last breath in this area."

Assad's forces still control the city of Idlib on a main highway linking Aleppo to the port of Latakia, making the route an important rebel target.

"Lots of roadblocks of Idlib have been taken out. Rebel focus is now on supplying the Aleppo highway," said Abu Ali, an activist using an alias.

CLUSTER BOMBS

New York-based Human Rights Watch said cluster bombs were dropped from planes and helicopters near the main north-south highway running through Maarat al-Numan, a town rebels seized last week cutting the route from Damascus to Aleppo.

HRW previously reported Syrian use of cluster bombs in July and August, but the renewed strikes indicate the government's determination to regain strategic control in the northwest.

Cluster munitions drop hundreds of bomblets on a wide area, designed to kill as many people as possible. More than 100 nations have banned their use under a convention which became international law in 2010, but Syria has not signed it, nor has Russia, China or the United States.

Towns targeted included Maarat, Tamanea, Taftanaz and al-Tah. Cluster bombs have also been used in other areas in Homs, Aleppo and Latakia provinces, and near Damascus, HRW said.

"Syria's disregard for its civilian population is all too evident in its air campaign, which now apparently includes dropping these deadly cluster bombs into populated areas," said Steve Goose, arms director at HRW.

HRW said it learned initially about the latest use of the weapons from videos released by opposition activists and had confirmed it in interviews with residents in two towns. It had no information on casualties. The bombs were Russian-made, but it was not known how or when Syria acquired them, it said.

Syrian government officials were not immediately available to comment on the HRW report. The official state news agency said on Sunday that loyalist forces had killed dozens of "terrorists" in Aleppo, and had captured rockets.

The United Nations peace envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, was in Tehran on Sunday. Brahimi, who took over the mediator job after former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan quit in frustration, will meet Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

"We think that these problems can be resolved peacefully. The United Nations and the Arab League are prepared to offer any assistance in resolving this crisis," Brahimi told a news conference after the meeting. "The U.N. is ready and demands a stop to the sending of arms to all groups in Syria."

Salehi said Iran was ready to work with Brahimi for peace and repeated its call for an immediate ceasefire before reforms and elections to resolve the conflict.

"We all need to join hands so that this conflict comes to a halt and further bloodshed is stopped," Salehi said.

Shi'ite Iran is the main ally in the region of Assad, who is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said this week Brahimi would visit Syria soon to urge Assad to call a ceasefire.

The anti-Assad uprising has been led by the Sunni Muslim majority and is backed by Sunni-ruled Arab states and by Turkey, also led by a party with its roots in Sunni Islamist politics.

Brahimi met with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Davutoglu and Syrian opposition members in Istanbul on Saturday.

The coordinated attacks hit just days after rebels launched an offensive against President Bashar al-Assad's forces in Syria's biggest city, leading to heavy fighting and a fire which gutted a large part of its medieval covered market.

The state news agency SANA said suicide bombers detonated two explosive-laden cars in the main square, Saadallah al-Jabiri, which is lined on its eastern flank by the military club, two hotels and a telecoms office.

The explosions reduced at least one building to a flattened wreck of twisted concrete and metal, and were followed by a volley of mortar bombs into the square and attempted suicide bombings by three rebels carrying explosives, it said.

Another bomb blew up a few hundred metres (yards) away on the edge of the Old City, where rebels have been battling Assad's forces.

State television showed three dead men disguised as soldiers in army fatigues who it said were shot by security forces before they could detonate explosive-packed belts they were wearing. One appeared to have a trigger device strapped to his wrist.

Another pro-Assad station, al-Ikhbariya TV, broadcast footage of four dead men, including one dust-covered body being pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building and loaded onto the back of a pickup truck.

The facades of many buildings overlooking the square were ripped off and a deep crater was gouged in the road. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 48 people were killed, mostly from the security forces, while SANA put the death toll at 31.

Wednesday's attacks in Aleppo followed last week's bombing of the military staff headquarters in Damascus, another strike by Assad's outgunned opponents against bulwarks of his power.

In July, rebels killed four of Assad's senior security officials including Assad's brother-in-law, the defence minister and a general in a Damascus bombing which coincided with a rebel offensive in the capital.

Government forces have since pushed rebel fighers back to the outskirts of Damascus. But they have lost control of swathes of northern Syria as well as several border crossings with Turkey and Iraq and failed to push the fighters out of Aleppo.

A pro-Assad Lebanese paper said on Tuesday that Assad was visiting the city to take a first-hand look at the fighting and had ordered 30,000 more troops into the battle.

Many rich merchants and minority groups in Aleppo, fearful of instability, remained neutral while protests spread through Syria. But rebels from rural Aleppo swept into the city in July and still control districts in the east and south.

Regional conflict

Opposition activists say 30,000 people have been killed across the country in the 18-month-old uprising, which has grown into a full-scale civil war with sectarian overtones and threatens to draw in regional Sunni Muslim and Shi'ite powers.

NBC/Marist/WSJ: Obama Up 8 In Ohio, Race Neck-And-Neck In Florida, Virginia

President Barack Obama continues to look like the clear favorite in Ohio, while the race is tight in Virginia and Florida, according to a trio of polls out Wednesday.

In the latest slate of swing state polls released jointly by NBC News, Marist College and the Wall Street Journal, Obama boasts a comfortable lead over Mitt Romney among likely voters in Ohio, 51 percent to 43 percent. The Buckeye State slipped away from Romney last month, and Wednesday's poll indicates that the president is maintaining his strong standing there.

Obama draws support from a variety of different sources in Ohio, including 45 percent from white voters in the state. The president leads big among women, 56 percent to 39 percent, as well as in every region of the state except Toledo in the northwest and Cincinnati in the south.

Obama leads Romney by a similar margin in Ohio, according to the PollTracker Average.

The race is decidedly closer in Virginia and Florida, where Obama leads Romney by 2 points and 1-point respectively. In the previous NBC/Marist/WSJ polls conducted in early September, Obama led Romney in each state by identical 5-point margins. Obama is viewed favorably by at least 50 percent of likely voters in each state, once again outpacing Romney in terms of personal popularity.

But the two are running neck-and-neck on the question of who would do a better job presiding over the economy. Obama is viewed as the better candidate to handle foreign policy by voters in each state, while in Florida, with its high population of senior citizens, the president is preferred over Romney to handle Medicare, 48 percent to 43 percent.

The PollTracker Average currently shows both Virginia and Florida favoring Obama.

The polls from NBC News, Marist College, and the Wall Street Journal were conducted Sept. 30-Oct. 1 using live phone interviews with 931 likely voters in Ohio, 969 likely voters in Virginia and 890 likely voters in Florida. Ohio's sample has a margin of error of 3.2 percent, Virginia's sample has a margin of error of 3.1 percent and Florida's sample has a margin of error of 3.3 percent.

The Advantages Of Green Painting - Arts and Entertainment News

There?s no doubt that the consumers have been almost entirely obsessed with price points and achieving value for money when making a purchase, and this is a more than understandable mindset for young families and individuals. This trend became even more pronounced during times of economic hardship, which diminished disposable income levels and caused consumers to slash their expenditure. One can take the sign writing into consideration.

As a demographic, consumers are far more open minded as we speed through 2012, and base their choice of products, suppliers and service providers based upon a far broader selection criteria.
