Brooklyn Seniors Join Forces To Promote Road ... - Retirement Homes

In Brooklyn?s Ocean Hill neighborhood, 50 seniors have formed an advocacy group to inspect unsafe road conditions.

Veronica Daniel, 63, is one of the group?s leaders, writing out safety issues in her notebook.

Daniel and other elderly members are on a road-condition-inspection mission, examining roads, taking notes on dangerous intersections in need of traffic lights, stop signs, and sidewalks in need of repair. Then, they report them to the Department of Transportation, according to MetroFocus.

Since 2010, East Harlem, Upper West Side and Bedford-Stuyvesant have become New York?s first Aging Improvement Districts, aimed to help older New Yorkers age better and more easily.

Ruth Finkelstein, senior vice president for policy and planning at the New York Academy of Medicine told MetroFocus: ?The core transportation in New York City is walking, and older adults are no different than anybody else.? Ms. Finklestein also said the city needs to give seniors more time to cross the street, to mark some of the crosswalks more clearly, and install countdowns and curb cuts.

Although Brooklyn seniors generally praise the city?s transit system, they bemoan the difficulty in walking to the closest bus or subway. The poor condition of the streets, dodging traffic, means its more likely they?ll stay at home and lose out on expeditions to see family, or go to entertaining outings.

Dwellers in Assisted Living and?Continuing?Care need assurance that travel is safe from their residences.

In Road-Building, Black Soldiers Defied Prejudice

In 1942, the Army Corps of Engineers assigned more than 10,000 men to build the Alaska Canada Military Highway. About a third were black soldiers: members of three newly formed ?Negro regiments? the corps accepted for the job because it had no choice, other engineering units having been dispatched to the Pacific theater.

The black soldiers faced vicious cold, heat, mosquitoes and mud, like everyone else. But they also had to contend with relentless racism.

The Army was still segregated; black units were led by white officers. As late as 1936, a manpower assessment produced at the Army War College described black soldiers as shiftless, dishonest and lazy. ?Say what you will,? the report declared, ?the American Negro is still a primitive human being.?

It was a view the Army as a whole embraced. The officers in charge were usually Southerners who supposedly ?understood? blacks but in fact disparaged and despised them. Senior commanders of the road-building effort, one of them the son of a Confederate general, declared that blacks (often they called them something else) might be able to wield picks and shovels, but not the heavy equipment the job required.

So when they were issued heavy equipment, black units sometimes received vehicles otherwise headed for the scrapheap. And sometimes they lost even that to white units whose equipment was delayed or damaged.

Heath Twichell, a historian and retired Army colonel who wrote ?Northwest Epic? (St. Martin?s Press, 1992), a history of the highway, known as the Alcan, said in an interview that his father, Col. Heath Twichell Sr., was assigned to the roadwork and was ?heartsick? when he was given command of a black unit. He thought the assignment would kill his chances of a promotion.

But he soon realized that all his men needed was a hard job they could do well and get credit for. They found it at the Sikanni Chief, a fast-flowing river through a gorge 300 feet wide in the mountains of British Columbia.

In what the elder Mr. Twichell wrote later was ?72 hours of ceaseless effort,? at times by the light of their truck headlights, the men felled trees, squared timbers, assembled trestles and waded chest deep into the ice-cold river to float them into position. They cut and assembled wood to form the bridge?s decking, and built and installed heavy timber cribs to protect its footings from ice and driftwood.

A photograph of this bridge, with a caption saying who built it, appeared in Time magazine in August 1942. More important, the unit had won a reputation on the ground as fast workers who produced sturdy bridges under highly adverse conditions, and who could operate and maintain their heavy equipment in the Alcan?s cold, heat and mud.

As the elder Mr. Twichell wrote in a letter home, ?We hear less and less about the supposed deficiencies of Negro troops.?

In October, two crews, one moving north and one moving south, completed the road?s last link. Later, The New York Times reported what happened when they ?met head-on in the spruce forests of the Yukon Territory.?

?Corporal Refines Sims Jr., a Negro from Philadelphia, was driving south with a bulldozer when he saw trees starting to topple over on him,? the account said. ?Slamming his big vehicle into reverse, he backed out just as another bulldozer, driven by Private Alfred Jalufka of Kennedy, Texas, broke through the underbrush.?

It continued, ?Immediately after this Yukon version of driving the golden spike, Sims and Jalufka turned their bulldozers around and began widening the opening.?

The story captured the public?s imagination. The Engineering News Record called it ?two races, working together to build a lifeline to Alaska?s beleaguered defenders amidst the most spectacularly rugged terrain and horrendous weather conditions imaginable.? The Army even promoted the story in Yank, its magazine for the troops.

When the highway was officially dedicated, Corporal Sims, Private Jalufka and two other soldiers, one black and one white, were there to hold the ceremonial ribbon.

Six years later, President Harry S. Truman ordered the Army desegregated, and many historians cite the Alcan experience as helping make that possible. On its Web site, the Federal Highway Administration calls the Alcan ?the road to civil rights.?

Sony Has Very High Hopes For The PS3's Sales Figures This Year

by admin on July 22, 2012

The shadow of next-gen may be looming over us and systems like the PS3 may be looking at their last or next to last fiscal year as the top of the retail heap. so Sony wants to unload as many as they can before the shiny models arrive on the showroom floor.

Sony Europe Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan told Videogamer that the company has high hopes for the sales total they want to hit before the final second passes on the clock for 2012: 13 million units, to be exact.

It may sound like a slightly lofty goal for a system that hasn't been in first place but Sony seems very confident that the buzz generated from their press conference by games like The Last of Us and the stunning battleship scene for Assassin's Creed III on their hardware can bring them to that number.

"It's pretty demanding, but given the software that was on? display we've got a pretty good crack at that. I'm given demanding, aggressive numbers to meet, and that's what I'm focussed on right now. I think [SCE? Worldwide Studios president] Shuhei Yoshida's team has given me the tools to do? that. I'm going to go out there and nail it."

Sony launches Android Walkman with FLAC

sony f800 walkman

Sony has launched a new Walkman music player. The Sony F800 features Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and, for the first time in a Walkman, support for FLAC files.

FLAC is an ultra-high quality lossless format prized by audiophiles but available on only a handful of portable music players. Elsewhere the F800 features a 4-inch screen, Tegra 2 dual-core processor and support for all manner of apps via Google Play.

There?s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a built-in speaker, and 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models will be available. You?ll be able to expect around 20 hours of music playback (or 4.5 hours of video) from a single battery charge.

The F800 will launch in the US in August (we?d expect a European release to happen around the same time). It?ll be accompanied by other, non-Android Walkman models. We?ll post reviews when we get our hands on them.

Restaurant cash advance ? Giving a boost to your business plan

Thriving restaurant business has pumped an energetic blow to the heart of financial sector. However, the banks are still very rigid and hardly want to grant loans to the small restaurants. So, the crisis is not yet over for the restaurant industry because finance crunch is there due to unavailability of sufficient fund to suffice the needs. The big eateries and hotels are exceptions; they get almost on demand due to their goodwill in the market.

There are several non-traditional financial houses to offer loans to the small businesses. However, only a few of them specialize in restaurant funding. Restaurant cash advance makes an automatic mention in this regard. It is actually not a loan but a special type of grant aimed to serve the same purpose as the business loans. Lesser paperwork is required on part of the borrowers to obtain advance. Often obligations like producing a guarantor or collaterals create obstacles on the way to get loans. These requirements are completely eliminated in case of restaurant advance.

Commercial banks have always been indifferent to the financial penury and predicament of the restaurants and other retail units. The banks consider that these businesses are highly prone to instability and in that case, will evade the bank loans. They are less likely want to invest into these businesses. Being turned down by the banks, the restaurants seek for other options like business cash advance that is easily and fast granted. Many a company has sprouted to extend helping hand in this regard. Merchantcashgroup.com has been operating for a good length of time. On strength of its top-notch performance, it has earned both name and fame for itself.

The company is renowned for its speedy processing, fast cash approval and transparency in service from beginning to end. The maximum time for loan approval is two working days. Online form filling facility is also available, thereby benefitting the tech-savvy users. The company considers only the presumed credit card transaction instead of focusing on credit card history of an individual. Merchantcashgroup.com accepts the high-risk businesses such as the start-ups or those with very poor credit background. Due to very little requirements of financial documents, the company can do faster loan processing and also deliver it to an individual?s personal account.

Restaurant cash advance is far different from the general purpose business loan. The former is unsecured loan whereas the later refers to secured funding. Unsecured lending carries higher risk and so the interest rate is little more than that for traditional lending. In absence of any hard and fast rule, the restaurant owners can utilize the loan for a variety of business purposes like purchasing a new set-up or expanding the existing one or modifying the old eatery etc. Payment is non-fixed type and changes according to the ebb and flow of credit card sale.

The Tempest | Prof. Ratigan

We are such stuff as dreams are made on and our little life is rounded with sleep.

I do intend to read all of Shakespeare?s plays (and possibly the sonnets too), to study his ways and enhance my bonnet?s due?okay, that?s enough of that.? They?re usually pretty entertaining and valuable at least in making me aware of the source of so many tropes and sayings and give them context.? But reading is such a chore and time consuming and seeing the plays acted does give some benefit.? The better the more the benefit, the worse the less.? The Tempest?(2010)?is worth its weight in an hour and a quarter if only to come to know Prospero and Caliban.

Prospera (Helen Mirren)?sorcerer made female for the benefit of casting?has been usurped from her duchy by Antonio (Chris Cooper) her brother.? Together with her daughter Miranda (Felicity Jones), they are exiled on some formidable island.? Prospera is aided by her deformed slave Caliban (Djimon Hounsou) and airy spirit Ariel (Ben Whishaw).? Prospera has become a sorceress with the aid of books and forms a tempest in which Alonso (David Strathairn), King of Naples, Sebastian (Alan Cumming) his brother, Gonzalo (Tom Conti) the old counselor, Stephano (Alfred Molina), the drunken butler, and Trinculo (Russell Brand) the jester are all removed from their passing ship and delivered to the island.? Prospera will have her revenge and entertainment.

Two things about this production stand out instantly?visual production and musical accompaniment.? These are usually the last to be mentioned, but with this subject in which we are so educated and foolish, the last shall be first.? I can see the meeting now.? ?Taymor?wants to do a production of The Tempest,? says he, linking obligingly.? ?Isn?t that the really weird one?? queries the other.? ?Yeah,? he replies, ?but we?re spent on titles at the moment she was going with Troilus and Cressida but I think they already did that with James Franco.?? ?Is it going to be a shot play or what?? the other inquires.? ?Film, filmy-film,? he says.? ?Well, we?ll have to jazz it up,? says the other.? ?She?s on it,? says he, ?it?s going to have funkadelics and psychadelics and Helen Mirren.?? ?Helen Mirren?? perks up the other, ?that?s alright then.?? ?And Alan Cumming,? says he.? ?Don?t be disgusting, she?s almost 70 years old,? says the other, ?nobody wants to see that.?? ?You?d be surprised,? he remarks.

Some of the music works quite well.? A little electronica, some deep booming stuff, all goes pretty well with the vivid images.? Where they absolutely fall apart is when the electric guitar comes in and it?s like the first run of Jesus Christ Superstar.? Funky but not fresh.? The same kind of problem arises with the visual art.? I like the idea of barren landscape filmed in HHHHD, but the camera is way too active.? Another camera trouble comes with the anachronism of Shakespearean language.? Here, for me, a medium shot makes me feel like I?m standing on the beach (or wherever) watching a rehearsal and it feels very foolish.? I find this happens most with Caliban (though that has something to do with the fact that I can hardly understand him when he?s shouting).

Then the graphic artists drank too much Red Bull or something and everything goes wildly CGI.? This almost uniformly happens in Ariel?s scenes.? Ariel?s scenes are also where you get the funky guitar playing like the Devil?s part in The Devil Went Down to Georgia.? It?s just too ambitious for its budget.? The images don?t blend in to the world around them.? Other scenes are effectively cut scenes that mean very little (to me, at least).? Basically, I didn?t like the graphics design, but appreciated the high gloss feel.? That all goes to Julie Taymor?(who adapted and directed)?as a big ol? eh.

Performances?? Fine.? Nobody was particularly anything.? You?ve got an all-star group, but the characters are flat and uninteresting. ?Whishaw, as Ariel, is the only one that struck me as remotely restraining himself to something approaching a character.

That leads me to the last issue: how was the play?

The Tempest strikes me as a hodgepodge of other Shakespeare plays (with a great deal of Midsummer Night?s Dream) but without the deep thoughtfulness you find in those with a proper villain.? I suppose you?d say Caliban is the villain of the piece (along with Antonio and Sebastian), but their lots are particularly uninteresting and their ruminations nil.? Since this is a sub-two hour production of a play which, though short for Shakespeare and shorter than Macbeth (notably short), may have some cuts that limit the complexity of the play.? But I sincerely doubt it.

As far as the story is concerned, I find it a bit bumpy.? Prospero basically strings these people along for a while and decides to stop because some of them are a bit sad to look upon.? Backstory pumped into a monologue or two, an instant love, and that?s the whole thing.? There?s a common understanding of Shakespeare that the stories are basically recycled material and his skill is in the writing.

Either I wasn?t in the mood (highly likely), it was not very good, or I?ve missed something. ?It?s too expensive to justify a purchase from any but the biggest die-hards.

It?s got a great poster, though. ?It?s too bad the story isn?t as dynamic.
